U.S. Soccer Star Megan Rapinoe Refuses to Visit the White House 🙅♀️
Rapinoe lashes out
A reporter from soccer publication Eight by Eight asked US soccer player Megan Rapinoe if she was looking forward to visiting the White House in the event that the national team wins the World Cup. Rapinoe responded with "Psssh, I'm not going to the f*****g White House.”
Trump takes to Twitter
Trump responded to Rapinoe on Wednesday afternoon, tweeting “I am a big fan of the American Team, and Women’s Soccer, but Megan should WIN first before she TALKS! Finish the job!” Trump also extended his invitation to the women’s national team whether they win or lose the World Cup.
Articles against Rapinoe generally lean right and don’t like the idea of Trump being challenged. Opinion pieces criticize Rapinoe for failing to use the opportunity to help bring the nation together through common support of the National Team and during what is supposed to be a very patriotic event.
Articles supporting Rapinoe commend her ability to stand up to the President and serve as a role model for women. Publications that show support are generally left-leaning and subscribe to the idea of a woman challenging Trump’s ego and power, agreeing that she must be doing something right if she’s caught the President’s attention.
Where's the common ground?
Ulimately, both sides continue to cheer on the Women’s National Team and wish success in their World Cup tournament. Articles on both sides cite the winning of a major international trophy as a possible way for the country to show unified patriotism in support of our team.
