School Shooting Leaves 1 Dead and 8 Injured 🏫
Tragedy in Colorado
A student has died, and eight were injured Tuesday evening, as gunfire rang out at Highlands Ranch STEM School in Highlands Ranch, Colorado. Douglas County sheriff Tony Spurlock stated that, “Two individuals walked into the Stem school, got deep inside the school, and engaged students in two separate locations.”
Highlands Ranch police have publicly stated that two suspects are involved – an adult male and a juvenile female student. The adult male has been identified as eighteen-year-old Devon Erickson. Erickson, a student at the school, reportedly walked into a classroom, unveiled a handgun that was concealed in a guitar case, and began firing. This tragedy takes place just six days following the shooting at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
The right is reporting the situation factually and objectively, but seem to focus more on the suspects and victims, rather than offering any form of political opinion. A fair amount of background information is reported on the identified suspect, such as old tweets and YouTube videos that have been posted under his name.
The left focuses largely on the overlying issue of school shootings. Left-leaning sources are quick to remind of the 109 school shootings that have occurred thus far in 2019. In order to control the outbreak of mass shootings in the United States, gun control is often brought up as a necessary change.
Where's the common ground?
Both sides recognize the situation at hand as a tragedy and school shootings as an ongoing national issue. Kendrick Castillo, who was killed in the attack, is being praised as a hero as details of his acts of courage to attempt to stop the shooter, giving classmates an opportunity to escape, have been revealed.
