Rosenstein in Jeopardy ⚠️
Remind me about Rosenstein
Rod Rosenstein, US Deputy Attorney General, was accused of planning to secretly tape the president and invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Trump from office. Rosenstein has denied these claims, explaining that his comment was a joke. He is scheduled to meet with Trump on Thursday.
Rosenstein appointed Robert Mueller to oversee the Russia probe and investigate Russia’s involvement in the 2016 elections. Rosenstein had acted as a barrier to keep Mueller from being fired, so his potential removal from office puts both Mueller and the Russia probe at risk.
The left believes that Rosenstein’s departure would endanger the future of Mueller and the special counsel. They argue that Rosenstein’s likely replacement, Noel Francisco, would not be able to withstand the pressure of the position. Rosenstein was required to balance the fine line between protecting the investigation while not further angering the conservatives or Trump.
Chicago Tribune: Trump vows to rid Justice Department, FBI of 'lingering stench'
The right strongly supports Rosenstein’s firing, reporting on Trump’s allusion to the FBI containing a ‘lingering stench.’ Outlets highlight the link between Rosenstein and the Obama administration since Rosenstein was previously a US attorney for the Obama and George W. Bush administrations. These outlets also accuse former FBI Directors Robert Mueller and James Comey of being part of the corrupt Obama administration.
Russia probe: will it last?
Amid Mueller's Russia investigation, Jeff Sessions’ recusal from the special counsel, and Paul Manafort’s revelations in court, Rosenstein’s removal would lead to a possible cease of the Russia probe and put Trump’s mind at peace. As a reminder, last year Trump tweeted, “I am being investigated for firing the FBI Director by [Rosenstein] who told me to fire the FBI Director! Witch Hunt.” What do you think?
