Oprah stumps for Abrams in GA

Oprah Winfrey was in Georgia yesterday campaigning for Stacey Abrams (D) who is in a neck and neck race for Georgia’s governorship. If elected, Abrams would be the first female African American governor in U.S. history.

Pence jumps in for Kemp

VP Pence was also in Georgia yesterday to support Brian Kemp, Abrams’ Republican opponent. In response to Oprah, Pence said, “I’ve got a message for all of Stacey Abrams’ liberal Hollywood friends: This ain’t Hollywood. This is Georgia."

The left focuses on the energy of the crowd at Abrams’ rally and highlights the historic nature of her run as a female African American. Abrams is polling well against Kemp, the left stresses, in a conservative state that hasn’t had a Democratic governor since 2003. The left also derides VP Pence’s “I’m a big deal, too” comment as “pathetic”.

The right similarly describes the energy of the crowd at Kemp’s rally and seeks to connect Abrams to “out of touch” Hollywood celebrities. While Abrams is “bankrolled by Hollywood liberals,” the right argues, Kemp is supported by “hardworking, good people across Georgia” and, of course, by President Trump.

Will Oprah’s support help Abrams win?

Potentially. There’s a good bit of study around whether celebrity endorsements help candidates - and the answer is “it depends”.  2016 showed us it doesn’t always work. Hillary Clinton lost with the support of many superstar celebrities backing her. However, in 2008, Oprah endorsed Obama - her first political endorsement ever - and scholars believe she swayed ~1M voters to vote for him.

Yes, she actually did this at the rally (proof)
