Are white men a huge terror threat?

During a conversation about recent incidents of violence and rhetoric from the president about the refugee ‘caravan’ headed to the US, CNN host Don Lemon said, “we have to stop demonizing people and realize the biggest terror threat in this country is white men, most of them radicalized to the right...

The backlash came swiftly

Conservative commentators were quick to label Lemon’s comments "racist" and Donald Trump Jr. called him a "moron" - adding that "this is how so many leftists actually think".

The left doesn't view Lemon's comments as racist. They point out that he was addressing President Trump’s rhetoric about the caravan, specifically. This side says Lemon was arguing that Trump is wrong to ‘vilify’ members of the caravan, since more acts of terror are committed by white men than undocumented immigrants.

The right believes Lemon's comments were racist and highlight the hypocrisy of his comments. In the same breath, this side argues, Lemon called for civil rhetoric, then called white men a “terror threat”. To these folks, this is further proof that Lemon, and CNN more broadly, are biased against President Trump.

Were Lemon’s comments racist?

Over the past decade, there have been almost twice as many terrorist incidents carried out on U.S. soil by right-wing extremists - most of whom are white - than, for example, by Islamist extremists. While Lemon's comments weren't false, they were clearly hypocritical. He called for an end to ‘demonizing' a group of people and then singled out a specific group.
