Quick reminder

We recently launched a new series called Common Ground. As a reminder, our goal with this series is to highlight the common values that left and right-leaning media outlets share. We're doing this because we want to remind our readers that not every topic is partisan and polarizing.

How will we do this?

We’ll take articles from the left and the right that seem to be telling a news story in the same way - and extract common values from them. We hope these common values spark a conversation of agreement with your neighbor on the other side of the aisle. 😊

TOPIC #2:

WSJ (Right): Facebook’s Messing With Instagram Prompted Co-Founders’ Departure

Vox (Left): Instagram’s co-founders just quit. That could be bad news for Facebook.

Summary: The co-founders of Instagram are exiting their parent company Facebook. In released statements, all appeared rosy and hopeful, but both the WSJ and Vox reported problems within Facebook.

Evidence of common ground:

  • Both mention a similar sour exit of the Whatsapp founders, also owned by Facebook

  • Vox mentions a “tense” relationship between Instagram and Facebook leadership

  • WSJ says the Instagram founders “clashed” with Zuckerberg

  • Both mention a slowdown in Facebook's growth

Common ground:
Zuckerberg is having issues with keeping his most successful contributors happy.

TOPIC #1:

Fox News (Right): Tiger Woods embraces girlfriend Erica Herman after golf great's first tour victory since 2013

NPR (Left): After 4 Back Surgeries, Tiger Woods Wins His First Golf Tournament

Summary:
Tiger Woods won the Tour Championship on Sunday, his first major golf win since 2013. This comes after various scandals, a DUI, and serious back problems. Both outlets seem to overlook his past and focus on his victorious comeback.

Evidence of common ground:

  • Fox News calls him “golf great” in title

  • NPR called his win one of the “greatest sports comebacks in history”

  • Fox News called it “an incredible comeback”

  • Both briefly mention his scandals, but mostly as part of his journey to Sunday’s victory

  • NPR says “golf fans can’t wait... to see how high the new old Tiger Woods can go”

Common ground:
Comebacks are great - whether they’re physical, moral, mental, or all of the above.

Uhhhhhh....hi?
