Quick reminder

We recently launched a new series called Common Ground. As a reminder, our goal with this series is to highlight the common values that left and right-leaning media outlets share. We're doing this because we want to remind our readers that not every topic is partisan and polarizing.

How will we do this?

We’ll take articles from the left and the right that seem to be telling a news story in the same way - and extract common values from them. We hope these common values spark a conversation of agreement with your neighbor on the other side of the aisle. 😊

Fox News (right): Trump fulfills terminally ill man's dying wish with phone call

CNN (left): A dying man just had his top bucket list wish fulfilled. It was a call from President Trump

Summary:  Jay Barrett is a Connecticut man with cystic fibrosis, a life-threatening disease. His dying wish was to talk to Donald Trump. On Tuesday night, that happened, and the left and the right reported on this moment of care.

Evidence of Common Ground:

  • Both articles are free of political spin

  • Both articles highlight that Barrett’s sister, who helped set up the call for her brother, is a Democrat

  • According to CNN, other Democrats helped to make it happen as well

  • Both include the supportive words between the Trump and Barrett

Common Ground:
This is a laudable moment – both for Democrats and Republicans working together and for support between Trump and a terminally-ill citizen

Daily Wire (right): NASA to conduct historic all-female spacewalk

Huffington Post (left): NASA's first all-female spacewalk will happen during Women's History Month

Summary:  A space walk is a rare event, usually to fix part of the spacecraft or to test new equipment. But on March 29th, there will be a NASA spacewalk that happens to be all-female, just in time for the end of Women’s History Month. While the Daily Wire article cited the HuffPo article extensively, both reported this without spin and with their own celebratory language.

Evidence of Common Ground:

  • Daily Wire calls this “historic” in title

  • Huffington Post includes tweets on the excitement of the astronauts on the historic nature of the space walk

  • Both highlighted that it was not orchestrated this way, with Daily Wire putting that fact in the subtitle

Common Ground: This is space-age progress, especially since it’s un-orchestrated

Houston, we have social progress!!
