Quick reminder

We recently launched a new series called Common Ground. As a reminder, our goal with this series is to highlight the common values that left and right-leaning media outlets share. We're doing this because we want to remind our readers that not every topic is partisan and polarizing.

How will we do this?

We’ll take articles from the left and the right that seem to be telling a news story in the same way - and extract common values from them. We hope these common values spark a conversation of agreement with your neighbor on the other side of the aisle. 😊

Fox News (right): Amazon’s NYC deal gets Cuomo, De Blasio on wrong side of Big Apple residents, fellow Democrats

NY Times (left): Amazon’s New York Home Qualifies as ‘Distressed’ Under Federal Tax Law

Summary: After a highly publicized nationwide-contest, Amazon finally revealed the location of its HQ2...New York City AND greater Washington DC. Both the left and the right criticized the process that led to the decision.

Evidence of common ground:

  • Fox News includes Democrat and Republican quotes criticizing concessions made to Amazon

  • NY Times notes that Amazon is taking advantage of moving into traditionally low income "opportunity zones"

  • NY Times mentions that Amazon's particular location was designated an opportunity zone just this year

  • NY Times says New York gave Amazon $1.7 billion in economic incentives

  • Fox News says the new Amazon jobs are expected to cost New Yorkers $48,000 each

Common ground: Amazon took advantage of incentives and loopholes it didn’t need, with politicians willing to accommodate

Washington Examiner (right):
'SNL': Dan Crenshaw accepts Pete Davidson's apology, delivers powerful message about veterans

CNN (left): Why Chinese civil servants are happy to occupy Uyghur Homes in Xinjiang

Summary: Last week, Pete Davidson made fun of veteran and congressman-elect Dan Crenshaw’s appearance (he has an eyepatch due to a war injury). The left and right found it to be bad taste. This week, SNL invited the congressman to join the show. Crenshaw and Davidson both spoke about the incident in a heartfelt manner and had some fun. The left and right highlighted the comradery.

Evidence of common ground:

  • Both sources include Davidson’s self-deprecating apology

  • Both discuss/quote Crenshaw using the moment to talk about forgiveness and veterans issue

  • Both include pictures/video stills that show Crenshaw and Davidson smiling together at the top of their articles

Common ground: We can all take a joke and forgive people - not everything needs to turn political

Amazon wins...again
