Quick reminder

We recently launched a new series called Common Ground. As a reminder, our goal with this series is to highlight the common values that left and right-leaning media outlets share. We're doing this because we want to remind our readers that not every topic is partisan and polarizing.

How will we do this?

We’ll take articles from the left and the right that seem to be telling a news story in the same way - and extract common values from them. We hope these common values spark a conversation of agreement with your neighbor on the other side of the aisle. 😊

TOPIC #2:

Fox News (right): Ryanair slammed for not removing passenger who used racist language toward seatmate

CNN (left): Man launches into racist rant on Ryanair plane -- but keeps his seat

Summary:
An elderly white man launched into an angry, racist tirade against an elderly black woman on a Ryanair flight from Barcelona to London [CLIP]. Ryanair moved the woman to another seat, but allowed the man to keep his seat. Both right and left news sources showed surprise towards Ryanair’s handling of the situation.

Evidence of common ground:

  • Fox News says Ryanair was “slammed” right in the title

  • CNN highlights that the "racist" man got to keep his seat right in the title

  • Fox News ends with tweets condemning Ryanair and a quote from the daughter of the elderly black woman

  • CNN includes tweets of politicians condemning Ryanair and ends with quotes from an upset passenger

Common ground:
Angry, racist customers should not be accommodated

TOPIC #1

Daily Caller (right): Fox News Stands In Solidarity With CNN After Bomb Scare, Issues Statement

Hollywood Reporter (left): Fox News Stands With CNN in Internal Memo: "We Condemn All Attempted Acts of Violence Against Media"

Summary:
Mail bomb scares racked the nation on Wednesday, with politically-motivated targets. One target was CNN’s New York headquarters. While some outlets focused on blaming the opposite side (as we reported), there was a silver lining with Fox News issuing an internal memo of condemnation for the incident and vocalizing support for CNN.

Evidence of common ground:

  • Fox News immediately condemned the potential attack on their fellow journalist colleagues at CNN

  • Daily Caller says Fox News “stood in solidarity” with CNN

  • Hollywood Reporter said Fox News put “aside competitive rivalries”

  • Both outlets included the full memo from Fox News

Common ground:
While there may be differences, no journalist should be subject to or threatened by violence

That old dude deserves some instant karma
