Comey vs. Trump

Former FBI Director James Comey recently posted a tweet criticizing Trump and the Republican party. The tweeted was prompted by Trump’s meeting with Putin that drew the ire of Americans from both sides of the aisle. Comey was fired last year by Trump over the way he managed the email investigation into Hillary Clinton. However, Trump himself later claimed that the Russia investigation had something to do with it as well.

Comey 101

James Comey was a registered Republican all his life until July 2016 (he's no longer registered with any political party). Comey served as a US Attorney and Deputy Attorney General under President George W. Bush, followed by FBI director under President Obama. Comey’s letter to Congress regarding the Clinton investigation 11 days before the election vaulted his name into the political arena. Many claim his letter cost Clinton the election.

The right labels Comey a RINO (Republican In Name Only) and proceeds to question his Republican credentials by highlighting his tenure as FBI director under Obama. They prompt the reader to question Comey’s reliability by quoting previous headlines from left-leaning media outlets that label him a liar. The right contends that his priority is opposing Trump more than convincing Americans to vote Democrat. Comey is also attacked for using patriotism to further his personal agenda.

The left is excited that even Comey, a lifelong Republican, is publically supporting Dems. The left asserts that Comey believes Congress is incapable of providing the necessary checks and balances on Trump. They highlight his tweet calling Putin a “murderous lying thug” and criticizing Trump for refusing to back his own country. Furthermore, the left focuses on Trump being criticized by both Republicans and Democrats.

Can James Comey be trusted?

According to a recent poll by ABC News and the Washington Post, more Americans trust James Comey than President Trump. That being said, Comey has come under criticism from both sides of the aisle for his handling of the Clinton investigation and his comments criticizing Trump. Consequently, Comey has also received praise from the left and the right for his integrity in handling difficult situations. Regardless, James Comey will remain a polarizing figure in American politics.
