AOC vs. ICE ❄️
Trump's address, revisited
On Wednesday, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC), the newly elected Congresswoman from New York, challenged many of the claims President Trump made in his Tuesday night speech on immigration.
AOC honed in on Trump’s call for a border wall as a humanitarian concern, citing that increased security at the border (in particular, ICE) has actually caused some immigrant deaths.
AOC'S ONTO SOMETHING:
Washington Free Beacon: Ocasio-Cortez accuses ICE of systematically violating ‘human rights,’ causing ‘death’
Those who believe AOC’s onto something often reference her arguments: first, that most illegal immigration to the US happens when people overstay their visas, and second, that government agencies have caused serious harm to immigrants, which undermines Trump's argument that illegal immigration is the main reason for his proposed border wall.
Those who believe AOC’s off attempt to discredit AOC’s arguments and various other contradictions. For one, they say that an immigrant child died recently in Border Patrol’s hands and not ICE’s. They also point out that AOC recently voted to increase Homeland Security funding, the branch that includes ICE.
Does AOC have a point?
AOC's right that government agencies have taken custody of people who subsequently experienced physical harm, even death. And Trump’s not wrong to say examples exist of illegal immigrant violence, but he inflates those numbers drastically. This argument is nothing new to the parties, and will probably not be resolved, ideologically, any time soon – in the meantime, the wall dispute means the government shutdown continues.
