Airstrikes Across Israel & Gaza 🚀
The Gaza strip has been highly contested territory between Palestine and Israel. Despite leaders in Cairo working towards a treaty, Palestine launched over 240 missiles at southern Israel, dozens of which Israeli air defense systems intercepted. In return, Israel launched an airstrike using planes and tanks.
How will this affect peace talks?
The attack comes at the same time as Hamas and Islamic Jihad leaders are in Cairo attempting to form a temporary calm. Egypt faces major roadblocks to their proposed reconciliation, as Israeli policy separates the Gaza Strip from the West Bank. Despite this, Egypt continues to fight for peace in Gaza.
Voice of America: Gaza Militants Fire Rockets; Israel Reprisals Kill 3
The right focuses on the two armies. Taking in the wider breadth of the situation, articles discuss the political implications of each side. The casualties aren’t ignored, but are focused on to a much lesser extent.
The left highlights the civilians killed in the attacks. Blame is shared by both armies as each fired in lieu of a ceasefire. However, articles put more emphasis on Israel’s retaliation than Palestine’s initial attack. Several articles mention a pregnant woman and her infant niece who were killed that Israel claims were casualties of Palestinian misfire rather than an Israeli airstrike.
Where's the common ground?
Both sides remark on the rising death toll and the overall chaos in the Gaza region. They agree the airstrikes are terrible, despite disparity over who is more in the wrong. Both sides hope for peace in the region and for casualties to be avoided in any development.
