Repeal 2nd Amendment, You Say? 🤔
Tell it to the judge
Retired supreme court justice John Paul Stevens made headlines yesterday when he called for a complete repeal of the 2nd amendment.
John Paul Stevens was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1975 under President Ford and retired in 2010. Although Stevens is a Republican, his judicial decisions have leaned more on the liberal side of the court. He's currently 97!
Chicago Tribune: John Paul Stevens is wrong. Trying to repeal the Second Amendment would be a pointless mistake.
Washington Examiner: White House rejects retired Supreme Court justice's call for Second Amendment repeal
The who oppose repeal say it is unnecessary and politically impossible. The White House believes the focus should be on preventing dangerous individuals from possessing a gun instead of banning all guns. Also, people who favor gun control are saying that ideas like Stevens’ are counterproductive to their efforts because it falsely suggests people like them want to take guns away from everybody.
Those who support repealing the 2nd amendment believe this drastic measure is necessary to prevent gun massacres from ever happening again. They are tired of seeing the NRA wield its influence to prevent legislation on guns, and see a repeal as an effective solution. Stevens’ argument is that the second amendment’s original purpose of maintaining a standing militia is outdated and doesn’t apply to today’s society.
What are the odds?
While many people support stricter gun laws (about 60%), most people don’t support repealing the 2nd amendment (only about 20%). Also, it is very difficult to repeal an amendment. It requires a 2/3 majority vote in both houses of Congress, and has to be ratified by 3/4 of all states. Looks like Stevens is facing an uphill battle.
