Stormy Daniels on 60 Minutes ⏰
What went down
Stormy Daniels was interviewed on 60 Minutes [WATCH], where she revealed information about her alleged affair with President Trump. With around 22 million people tuning in to watch the interview, it became the most-watched episode in a decade.
Daniels recounted how she hooked up with Trump back in 2006, while he was married to Melania Trump. Sometime after, she had a scary encounter in a parking lot with a man who made veiled threats at her if she were ever to tell anyone about her past relationship with Trump.
11 days before the 2016 election, the President’s lawyer, Michael Cohen, gave Daniels $130,000 to sign a non-disclosure agreement, which she signed because she feared for her safety. By the way, this is all going off of her word, so everything at this stage is alleged. Trump has denied that he ever had an affair with her.
The right thinks the interview was a big pot of lies. It contained no new information and was a needless attempt by the left to mar the president’s image on broadcast TV. They also refute the left’s claims that these revelations will damage Trump's chances of reelection, saying that a large part of his base (conservative Christians) will still support him.
The left sees this interview as further proof that Trump is a man with low morality and someone who solves his personal problems by making threats. They believe this demonstrates how an adult film star has more class than the president - a man who strongarms people into staying silent about anything that will hurt him or his reputation.
Prominent attorneys and members of Congress are still discussing whether Cohen’s $130,000 “hush money” to Daniels violated campaign finance laws. Regardless of the truth, this ordeal has brought a ton of negative attention with potential legal/political consequences for Trump. Fortunately for Trump, he's coming off the heels of a seemingly strong week in which he is building his dream cabinet, and has a CNN poll that shows his approval rating is at its highest in almost a year. 42%.
