Russian Infiltration 🕵️
The cat's out of the bag
Special Counsel Robert Mueller has officially indicted 13 Russians and three Russian entities for interfering in the 2016 US elections. The Russians launched an elaborate campaign to buy ads on social media that criticized Hillary Clinton and promoted Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders. To avoid detection, they worked under pseudonyms and posed as politically active American citizens.
The mystery men
All 13 Russians worked for the “Internet Research Agency”, a seemingly innocent company that turns ugly once you take a closer look. The Russian company is bankrolled by one of the most powerful oligarchs in Russia: Yevgeny V. Prigozhin, who has strong ties to Putin.
The right highlights that the indictment does not say there was collusion between the Russians and the Trump team. In other words, if anyone from Trump’s team had any contact with these Russians, it was done unknowingly. They also point out that the Democrats’ obsession of trying to prove collusion between Trump and Russia has given the Russians what they wanted: dissension and political chaos in America.
The left says 'told ya so' to counter Trump’s narrative that the Russia investigation is a “hoax”. This validates their theory that something nefarious was going on behind the scenes after all. Also, taking a jab at the President, the left says this proves that Trump could not have won the election on his own merits (debatable). The indictment does not tie the Russians directly to Trump, but the left is trying hard to make it seem that way.
What does this all mean?
Note that the indictment does not say the Russian trolls changed the outcome of the election. The DOJ is in the process of extraditing the accused, but let’s be honest, the Russian government isn’t likely to play along. Now, there are questions if Trump will act to hold the Russian government accountable. He’s been slammed by the press for being too lenient on Russia after recently deciding against new sanctions. Keep your eyes peeled to see if he changes course.
